My husband and I didn't really have a lot of family traditions and holiday foods growing up so we are working hard to start traditions to give our kids. One is gingerbread, which we usually cut into men. One we are thinking of starting is actually for New Year's. My husband is Hispanic and I am not, but for some reason I can make a mean tamale. I hate them, but my family loves them and since I make so many other foods at Christmas, we can't do the tradition of making tamales for Christmas, so we'll try for New Year's. Happy Holidays!

Thank you to everyone who has shared their holiday favorites. My mouth was watering as I read about them. Making cookies has always been a part of holiday preparations at our house. Every year we make angel slices from the Joy of Cooking and hazelnut crescents. And we always try a new cookie recipe. This year it was Florentines, which taste a lot like almond brittle. Pecans in the angel slices, hazelnuts, almonds--I guess you could say we're nuts about Christmas.

My Mom was English and we always celebrated twelfth night. She made a traditional divine homemade fruit cake special for twelfth night which she made early in December and cured. It represents the true traditions of twelfth night. She served it with a homemade hard sauce which was divine. She always shared the story of twelfth night as we ate her delicious fruit cake and we discussed the meaning traditionally of twelfth night . We left our decor and tree up until after twelfth night. The traditionally homemade fruit cake with my great great great Grandmas receipe from Merry old England will always be true Twelfth night to my heart. I can still see Mom serving proudly her homemade fruit cake and telling the bible story. Her faith and twelfth night were very important to her.

I live in New Orleans where we have a traditional cake called a King Cake that we serve starting the day after Christmas until the last day of Mardi Gras. That falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The cake contains a small plastic baby figure hidden in the cake. My favorite is Rosca, which is a version of Twelfth Night Cake. Instead of a bean, though, there are little plastic babies representing Jesus. Because of this my children always called it Baby Bread. Funny story about it: one year I took a large one with 6 babies in it to my work. Most of my co-workers never heard of it so I thought it would be fun to share. Every single person who had a baby in their piece of cake, had a real baby later that year. The end of the year, after Thanksgiving, everyone kept telling to not bring the cake again. While they thought it was delicious no one wanted to chance a repeat. Hahaha.

My grandmother, and later on my mom, used to make Christmas cookies they called "Pecan Dreams". I found out as an adult they are known by many names, including "Italian Wedding" cookies. They were rolled in powdered sugar, so both my mom and grandmother used to color them with red or green food coloring for the holidays. The white ones looked like little snowballs. Those are some of my earliest memories of great Christmas cookies. Now my daughter makes them too, for her family!

I have several foods that come to mind but the most memorable is rolled oysters. Family would always be coming and going during the holidays and when we would have many guests gathered together, one of the adults would venture out in the cold and maybe snow if we were lucky, and would get rolled oysters for everyone. They were huge. They arrived in a large brown paper bag with plenty of oyster crackers and ketchup. They seemed to set the stage in anticipation of the Christmas dinner that would follow . . .

Gingerbread is my go-to holiday treat. I love gingerbread cake just out of the oven topped with homemade whipped cream. This always reminds me of home and Mom.

My favorite holiday food is ... Spritz cookies made with cream cheese and lots of sprinkles. My Mom made these for us every Christmas, and in remembrance we still make them to share at Christmas. They're never quite as good as we remember Mom's, but it's the memories that count!.

Prime Rib with Yorkshire Pudding tops my list of favorites. Creme brûlée makes a great dessert! Thank you for this opportunity. I have not read any of the books on the list yet. ❤️

Holiday food is so special. For some holidays we have baked ham and just the smell of it baking in the oven, brings memories of all the holidays from when I was little to now with my kids. Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie time and it's one of my favorite desserts. Just the smell of pumpkin pie is amazing.

I try not to bake or make andy much during the year as I am the one who eats most tof them so at Christmas I make almond joy cookies and bark using dark chocolate, chopped craisins, pecans, almonds with a little bit of black cherry balsamic vinegar and a smidgin of basil essential oil....maybe just sticking a toothpic in the oil then stirring it in the choc mixture....

I remember when I was younger going to my grandparents house and the moment we would walk in, you could smell all the cookie baking in the oven. I know there we're other times cookies were baked but it's just something about Christmas and cookies. (I wish I could bake.. most times I try it ends up being a epic fail 😉)

My Mom's version of kolackies were made like little tarts with cherry pie filling and a glaze. It took her 2 days to make them. A lot of work, but they were sooooo good.

Baklava! The recipe my mom uses has a bunch of walnut and phyllo layers and practically oozes honey sauce.
